Frequently Asked Questions

Who is it for?

Counselling and psychotherapy is for any individual who may be experiencing difficulty or distress in their lives. It is for any individual who would like to talk to someone in confidence who is trained professionally to help, someone who is not a friend or family member. Some of the issues counselling may help with include: Anxiety and stress; Depression; Relationship Difficulties; Loss and Bereavement; Living with Illness; Trauma/ Family/ Relationship Dysfunction, Abuse; Self Esteem and Confidence issues; Eating Difficulties. These are just a few examples of some of the problems that people seek counselling for. You may not know what it is that's troubling you and may need time to start to let this unfold in our work together and this ok too.

People also seek Counselling and Psychotherapy to help them develop their self awareness for personal growth reasons, including other professionals and trainee Counsellors. I currently work with students who are training to become Counsellors. Please contact me for further details.

Where do you work?

My office is in Woodthorpe, Nottingham. For Counselling and Psychotherapy near Mapperley Nottingham, please call me or email me for details. Please note, due to Corona virus, I am working remotely and offering all clients virtual sessions via Skype, FaceTime or telephone. I offer this way of working as an alternative to meeting in person for clients who it is suitable for and, this can be suitable for a variety of reasons, not only in the current situation of the Corona virus. I acknowledge some people need therapeutic support who can not physically get into see me at my office and so working virtually can work for many people who need this option.

How long do I come for?

This depends on the nature of your problem. We will discuss this during the initial assessment session. Some clients are seen on a short term basis e.g. (6-8 sessions) to deal with a specific problem. Others are working on deeper issues and for this reason, generally need more time. Longer term psychotherapy can be anything from a year upwards. Regular reviews of our work are carried out to ensure you are getting what you need from counselling and that we are on track in the work.

Is everything I say confidential?

I treat the content of our therapy sessions as confidential, outlined by the SPTI ethical codes of practice and the UKCP codes of ethical practice of which I am a member. In addition to this, I comply with GDPR.

Fees and payment

My fees for therapy are £55 per session for individual therapy. I charge £50 for the initial consultation session (see below). I offer a limited number of concessionary places for people on low incomes. Fees are reviewed and are subject to increase each year. Payment is made in full at the commencement of each session.

The Initial Consultation session

If you decide to get in touch, you will be offered an initial assessment session which will provide a confidential assessment of your difficulties. I will assess whether Counselling and Psychotherapy could help you. The initial assessment session lasts roughly 50 minutes. Should we meet and need longer time to explore whether therapy can help, then we can discuss this at the initial meeting and agree to meet again if appropriate. At the end of this appointment, I provide a written agreement that outlines things such as confidentiality, information about attending therapy, your rights under Data protection, so that you have time to decide if you would like to begin this process with me.

The fee for the initial assessment session is £50. I will offer other resources and possible referrals to other appropriate agencies if you or I felt therapy was not appropriate.

What next?

If you are uncertain whether counselling or therapy is for you, or if you would like to find out more, please contact me by phone or email. I will speak to you briefly and then we can arrange a no commitment consultation if this is something you wish to do. Here we can discuss your reasons for coming and whether counselling and psychotherapy can help.
